There are several ethical issues that are raised while working with stem cells. The ethical issues were addressed in guidelines for research with human embryonic stem cells by the National Academies. This urges scientists who work with embryonic stem cells to be responsible, ethical and sensitive in their work. The guidelines were not legally binding but laid the foundation for stem cell research principles for many scientists and their laboratories. The largest controversy with stem cell research is the use of an embryo.

A joint research effort carried out by MIPT scientists and Harvard researchers has yielded retinal cells that can integrate into the retina. This is the first successful attempt to transplant ganglion cells retinal neurons that are destroyed by glaucoma derived from stem cells in a lab setting. Scientists tested the technology in mice and established that the cells successfully integrated and survived for a year. In the future, the researchers plan to create specialized cell banks, which will permit individual, tailored therapy for each patient. The world's first successful attempt to grow and transplant retinal ganglion cells developed from stem cells was made by scientists from MIPT's genomic engineering laboratory in collaboration with researchers from Harvard Medical School. Retinal ganglion cells, commonly damaged in glaucoma, are responsible for the transmission of visual information.

Stem cell researchers are heralding a "major scientific discovery", with the potential to start a new age of personalised medicine. Scientists in Japan showed stem cells can now be made quickly just by dipping blood cells into acid. Stem cells can transform into any tissue and are already being trialled for healing the eye, heart and brain. The latest development, published in the journal Nature , could make the technology cheaper, faster and safer.
